The Transport Division of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office is a group of
10 officers who duties and responsibilities cover a large area of the Sheriff's
Office. The transport Division is responsible for all inmates taken to and from the
court system. This includes remaining with the inmates during all court proceedings
and providing courtroom security for the court to which they are assigned. This
includes Circuit, General Sessions, Juvenile , Chancery and Grand Jury proceedings.
In addition, Transport is responsible for all arrests made during court on warrants or any
violation of law. Transport is also performs the duties of acting court officer for
any Judge when needed.
In addition to their court transport duties, the division spends many hours of
the day on the road. They are responsible for all in-state transports as a result of
warrant activity or court ordered pick-ups and when required, out-of-state
extraditions. The division also provides for the transport of inmates to and from
the Tennessee Department of Corrections who are required for court in Rutherford
County. This also includes the inmates of the Rutherford County workhouse.

The duties of the transport officers also extent to Jury trials. They are
responsible for providing officers to protect and serve the jurors of sequestered juries.
These officers remain with the jury during all court proceedings as well as after
court at the provided hotel location. This includes nights and weekend coverage.
It is the responsibility of the division supervisors to set up all accommodations
for the jury including hotel reservations and restaurant locations.
Transport also deals daily with medical appointments for all inmates.
This includes doctor's offices, dental visits, surgery, x-rays, emergency room visits,
emergency committals and inpatient hospital stays. In addition, safe
transports for the general public on emergency committal are provided if needed.
The Transport Division also provides assistance to other divisions, both within
and outside of the Sheriff's Office each day. They assist with the service of civil
warrants, transport "high-risk" offenders for the Juvenile Detention Center to
various locations, transport inmates required to attend court in Smyrna for the the Smyrna
General Sessions and provide assistance to the Patrol Division where possible with
motorist assists and traffic control.

The Transport Division requires training in many areas. Officers are
trained in officer safety, weapons handling and control, ASP baton certification, chemical
weapons certification, qualification with a duty weapon and certification in high-risk
transport. Each officer is required to pass a physical agility test each year.
Transport, like many divisions within the Sheriff's Office, is required to
interact daily with the public and provide assistance when needed. It is a honor and
privilege to provide this service to the citizens of Rutherford County.
