 The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office (RCSO) has six main divisions:
 
- Administration
- Patrol or Field Services
- Investigative Services
- Warrants and Records
- Detention
- School Resource Officers

 The Sheriff's Office has evolved from a small jail in 1980 holding 38 inmates daily, to a correctional center that houses over 800 inmates at a time. Approximately 12,000 detainees were processed this year compared to 1,947 in 1980.  Additions to the Sheriff's Office in recent years include the Dive Rescue Team, Mounted Horse Patrol, Felony Arrest and Search Tactical Team (F.A.S.T.), Dual-Purpose Motorcycle Unit, Marine Boat Patrol, Emergency Response Team, Tactical Dispatch Team, Hostage Negotiators, Felony Apprehension Team, Criminal Warrants Apprehension Unit, Courthouse Security
