DATE AND LOCATION: The next course will be announced at a later date. COURSE DESCRIPTION: It is an 88 hour classroom and 24 hour clinical program designed for paramedics who transport critically ill patients between medical facilities. This group of critically ill patients presents the paramedic with unique challenges during transport that require in-depth understanding of highly technical critical care support. The critical care paramedic is challenged to anticipate complications, which might develop during transport and to trouble shoot problems with the invasive lines and technical equipment used to treat and monitor these patients. Transporting critically ill patients requires an understanding of the pathophysiology of the patient’s disease, enhanced assessment skills to evaluate the patient’s status and an understanding of the inter-relationship of physiology and pathophysiology. To meet these advanced learning needs this course will include the transport of patients with neurological impairment, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory failure, renal failure, shock and multisystem organ dysfunction. Each unit is designed to present a review of anatomy and physiology, assessment skills, pathophysiological concepts, and complications. Management of critically ill patients during transport includes drug therapy, monitoring devices, invasive catheters and lines, and mechanical cardiopulmonary support equipment. ENROLLMENT: Licensed EMT-paramedics must have at least two years of experience as a field paramedic and have current certifications in CPR, ACLS, PALS and BTLS/PHTLS. CREDIT: 9.0 CEUs will be awarded upon completion of the course. TUITION: Tuition for the class will be $600.00. Students will need calipers and the textbook: Critical Care Nursing by Hudak Current edition. This book will be available the first day of the course.
