TRANSFER TITLE OWNERSHIP OF NEW VEHICLE

TO OBTAIN A TENNESSEE TITLE ON A NEW VEHICLE…

bulletThe owner of the vehicle must appear in person to apply for a Tennessee Title on a new vehicle. If the owner is unable to appear in person, a Power of Attorney form must be completed and notarized authorizing someone else to transact the title transfer on the owner's behalf.

bulletPlease note that only one owner's signature is required if the vehicle is titled to two or more owners and their names are joined by the conjunction "or". When the conjunction "and" is used, all parties must sign or submit notarized Power of Attorney.
bulletThe owner of the vehicle or the Power of Attorney must submit the following:
bullet(MSO) Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (Odometer Statement is on back)
bulletBill of Sale from the dealership.
bulletCurrent vehicle registration on the trade-in vehicle if transferring the license plate.
bulletA transfer fee of $17.50 if transferring a license plate from another vehicle.
bulletA transfer fee of $87.50 if purchasing a new license plate.

PLEASE NOTE: Additional sales tax may be due if vehicle was purchased out of state.

bulletTitle signed by the previous owner on the reverse side of the title, indicating the name and full address of the new owner and lien holder (if applicable), the date of transfer and the purchase price. Never assign a certificate of title leaving the purchasers name blank (open title)
bulletBill of Sale if vehicle was purchased from a dealer.
bulletOdometer Statement (required on all vehicles less than ten years old).
bulletEmissions Testing Certificate unless transferring license plate.
bulletAffidavit of Non-Dealer Transfers of Motor Vehicles required if:
bulletVehicle was a gift from a spouse, sibling, child, grandchild, great grandchild, parent, grandparent, great grandparent, or spouse of lineal relative).
bulletVehicle was purchased at a low selling price considered to be 75% or less of the fair market value by reference to the most recent issue of an authoritative automotive pricing manual, such as the N.A.D.A. Official Used Car Guide, SE Edition).
bullet AFFIDAVIT OF NON-DEALER TRANSFERS OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND BOATS (PDF format, click here for further instruction).
bulletTransfer fee of $17.50 if transferring license plate from another vehicle.
bulletTransfer fee of $87.50 if purchasing a new license plate.

PLEASE NOTE: If vehicle is purchased from individual, sales tax will be collected by the Motor Vehicle Department in the Office of the Rutherford County Clerk. If vehicle was purchased out of state, additional sales tax may be due.

REPLACEMENT OF TENNESSEE TITLE

TO OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT TENNESSEE TITLE…

bulletThe owner of the vehicle must appear in person and show valid identification to obtain a Tennessee Title. If the owner is unable to appear in person then a Power of Attorney form must be completed and notarized authorizing someone else to obtain the Tennessee Title.

bulletOwner or Power of Attorney must submit a copy of the vehicle registration or the (VIN) Vehicle Identification Number.
bulletThere is no charge to obtain a replacement Tennessee Title if the title was not received within 90 days from the date of application. Please note that title cannot be replaced until after 15 days after the title was issued.
bullet

Replacement fee is $11.00. Cash, Money Order, Debit or Credit Cards. (Additional fees apply to credit and debit card transactions.)  REPLACEMENT TITLE FORM. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, the Office of the County Clerk will mail the replacement Tennessee Title to your mailing address.

NOTING OF LIEN ON TENNESSEE TITLE

TO NOTE A LIEN ON A TENNESSEE TITLE…

bulletOwner must appear in person or submit notarized Power of Attorney form authorizing someone else to note the lien.
bullet POWER OF ATTORNEY FORM (PDF format, click here for further instruction).
bulletSubmit Tennessee Title
bulletSubmit a copy of the Security Agreement provided by the Lienholder.
bulletPay a fee of $10.50 to note the lien. NOTING OF LIEN APPLICATION
