Naturalization and Petition Record Dates: 1922-1924. One item The immigration records for Rutherford County were kept by the Circuit Court Clerk. There is only one volume, and only one record in that volume. Because so few immigrants became naturalized citizens in Rutherford County the Circuit Court ordered, in 1924, that they would no longer be responsible for naturalization proceedings and all further naturalization proceedings would be addressed to the Chief Naturalization Examiner, U. S. Department of Labor, Washington D. C. Sam DeGeorge of Palermo, Italy was the only immigrant to become a naturalized citizen in Rutherford County--or the only one for whom we have record. He obtained his citizenship on the 21st of February 1924. DeGeorge was a fruit merchant and operated a successful store on the square in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Albert Gore, Sr. Research Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University interviewed Vincent DeGeorge--Sam's oldest son. For sound clips, photographs, and more information on Sam DeGeorge or Vincent DeGeorge visit the Albert Gore, Sr. Research Center Oral history page.
